It’s not just a case of the action feeling smoother but that Blackout offers a fundamentally more entertaining experience in terms of second-to-second action, which alone changes the whole nature of playing Battle Royale. Not only do the guns feel much better to use but the movement system is the same as regular Call Of Duty, as you slide, vault, and aim down sights in what becomes a giant-sized game of virtual toy soldiers. And that makes a huge difference compared to the competent-but-unremarkable action of Fortnite and the downright shonky gunplay of PUBG. It’s not locked at 60fps, as it is for standard multiplayer, but it rarely seems to dip below it and feels as smooth and precise as you’d expect from the series. The latter is a more tempting option in Blackout than other games simply because the gunplay in Call Of Duty is far superior to any of its rivals. Everything else has to be found during play, as you make the key tactical decision of whether to try to lay low and wait for everyone else to kill each other or go in guns blazing from the start.

Either way you only get one life and start each match with only limited equipment and weapons. PUBG and Fortnite both allow for up to 100 players at a time but the Blackout beta has varied between 80 and 88, as developer Treyarch try to figure out the optimum number. Battle Royale isn’t really anything more than that but on a larger scale, with dozens of players competing on a very large map whose playable area slowly contracts as the match goes on.
HOW TO GET CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS 4 PC BETA MODS
Neither PUBG nor Fortnite invented the idea and instead it evolved out of fan-made mods riffing on the age-old concept of Last Man Standing. If you’ve somehow avoided talking to anyone about video games in the last year, and don’t know what Battle Royale is, it’s not a difficult concept to get your head around. But that’s actually what makes Blackout so interesting… In fact, although Battle Royale suits Battlefield down to the ground Call Of Duty is the complete opposite, and there’s nothing in the game that lends itself to the genre other than its general qualities as a first person shooter.
HOW TO GET CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS 4 PC BETA SERIES
What awaits them is the largest map ever produced for Call Of Duty, which is of course a necessity for any Battle Royale game – even though the series is best known for its small, tightly-designed maps. But PlayStation 4 owners who have pre-ordered the game got to start playing on Monday, while Xbox One and PC owners will be able to start on Friday at 6pm (with an open beta for PC owners only on Saturday). There’s already been a beta for normal multiplayer but this week it’s the turn of Blackout, although as usual when exactly it’s available is horribly complicated. Black Ops 4 famously doesn’t have a story campaign and so it’s split into three separate multiplayer options: the traditional competitive mode, Zombies, and Blackout. Black Ops 4’s Battle Royale mode is called Blackout.
